World Health Organisation

"This is going to grow like a forum, and I can only make the parallels to the World Economic Forum, which discusses economic issues and endeavours, and the Aspen Institute, the think tank in the United States. Well, this has all the makings in Australia to bring the best brains related to ageing, so that we can discuss the most important demographic issue of the 21st century, which is of course ageing."

Dr. Alexandre Kalache, MD, PhD. Coordinator, Ageing & Life Course Programme, World Health Organization (WHO).

Background on the International Conferences on Healthy Ageing & Longevity

The initial facilitation activity of IRCHAL has been the annual conferences which have quickly achieved recognition as significant "world forums". IRCHAL has conducted three conferences in Sydney (2004), Brisbane (2005) and Melbourne (2006) and is committed to facilitating a further ten such forums.

The conference programs are designed to stimulate discussion, debate, collaboration and the exchange of ideas -- creating fertile ground for forward thinking and decision making.

The conferences explore the full spectrum of proven and potential ageing interventions including pharmaceutical, nutritional, clinical, educative, policy, complementary, preventive and restorative means and the scientific underpinnings supporting them. At the same time the conferences recognise the diversity of ageing individuals, cultures and methodologies within all communities and across the globe.

All three conferences have been successful in attracting a wide cross section of delegates including scientists, academics, educators, policy makers, doctors and allied health professionals, students and the general public. The conferences have also stimulated widespread interest from national and international media. The full Conference Proceedings are professionally recorded on DVD and distributed for educational use consistent with IRCHAL’s objective of disseminating evidence-based knowledge on healthy ageing and longevity.

The first conference in Sydney in 2004 had over 50 speakers representing 8 countries, and the second conference in Brisbane in 2005 had in excess of 80 speakers representing 12 countries. The third conference in Melbourne in 2006 had in excess of 100 high-profile speakers representing 20 countries, with the addition of 50 poster presenters who also made an important contribution to the programme.

In recognition of their quality, the second and third conferences were co-sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) consistent with its view that they have already become recognised as an important world forum on healthy ageing and longevity. The second and third conferences were also endorsed by the United Nations Focal Point on Ageing, the Prime Minister of Australia, the Australian Federal Government and the Australian State Governments of Queensland and Victoria.

The dates and venue for the fourth conference will be determined by an appropriate commitment of funding from ethical sponsors, and host country/state/city governments.

The influence of IRCHAL achieved through its conference activities will be significantly leveraged through engaging with other related professionals who work as personal advisers and service providers outside the specific field of health ageing and longevity but whose activities are particularly relevant. Examples are personal financial planners, financial product providers (both investment and risk protection providers), superannuation funds, accountants and actuaries;, IT companies; architecture, design and constructions companies.
